While tremendous progress has been achieved in developing lab-grown meat as a future replacement to conventional meat, overcoming consumer reluctance because of worries about potential human health influence remains an important hurdle. Previous research examined how individuals feel about lab-grown meat from a demographic aspect. However, there has been limited study on how different levels of construal influence the assessment of lab-grown meat. Based on Construal Level Theory, this study tried to assess the effect of temporal distance on attitudes toward lab-grown meat, as well as purchase intentions, safety perceptions, and potency. When the temporal distance is regarded as nearer, attitudes, purchasing intentions, safety, and potency toward lab-grown meat are evaluated higher than when the temporal distance is perceived to be far away. This is due to the fact that a higher temporal gap leads to more abstract thinking, where judgments are likely based on the stereotype that "lab-grown = unsafe."
미래 거리의 대안으로 배양육에 대한 개발이 많이 이뤄졌지만, 여전히 배양육에 대한 인체 유해성에 기반한 거부감은 넘어서야 할 큰 장애물이다. 선행 연구들은 배양육에 대한 거부감을 인구통계학 측면에서 확인하였다. 하지만 배양육을 평가할 때 해석수준에 따라 달라지는지 대한 연구는 제한적이다. 본 연구는 해석수준이론(Construal level theory)에 근거하여 시간거리의 차이가 배양육에 대한 태도와 구매의도, 안전함과 효능감에 대한 인식에 영향을 주는지 확인하고자 했다. 연구결과, 시간거리를 가깝게 지각할 때는 시간거리를 멀게 지각할 때 보다는 배양육에 대한 태도,구매의도, 안전함, 효능감에 높게 평가하였다. 이는 시간거리를 멀게 지각하면, 추상적인 정보에 집중하는 상위 수준에서 사고하기 때문에, “배양 = 불안전”하다는 스테레오 타입에 기반하여 배양육을 판단하기 때문이다.
