Shared devices in public spaces are installed and operated for those visiting the space. However, the operation of these devices rarely reflects the preferences of the actual visitors. As a result, visitors find themselves in a paradoxical situation where shared devices meant for their convenience do not really consider their opinions, causing discomfort. To address this issue, a new control method called instantsocial control of shared devices is proposed. However, the actual utilization and acceptance of this new control method by visitors have been largely unexplored. This paper conducts a qualitative study deploying instant social control of shared devices in two real-world settings. By deep observations on the reactions of the visitors to this deployment, I found the satisfaction and acceptance of participantsregarding instant social control of shared devices. I discovered various usage patterns of instant social control of shared devices by participants. I observed diverse levels of consideration towards other visitors. This paper represents the first in-depth exploration of the utilization and acceptance of instant social control of shared devices by public space visitors for shared devices. Additionally, it is the first study to observe the shared device social control through computer-mediated interaction among unfamiliar individuals in a real-world environment.
공용공간 속 공용기기는 공간을 방문하는 사람들의 편의를 위해 설치되고 운영된다. 그런데, 그 기기의 조작에 실제 방문자들의 의사는 거의 반영되지 않는다. 이로 인해 방문객들은 자신들을 위한 공용기기가 자신의 의견을 반영하지 못해 불편을 겪는 역설적인 상황에 놓인다. 이러한 문제의 해결을 위해 공용공간방문객들에 의한 공용기기 즉시적 공동조작이라는 새로운 조작 방식이 제안되고 있다. 하지만 이 새로운 조작 방식에 대한 방문객들의 실제 활용과 수용은 거의 탐구되지 않았다. 본 논문는 현실의 두 공간에 공용공간 방문객들에 의한 공용기기 즉시적 공동조작을 현실 공용 공간에 배포하고 이에 대한 방문자들의 반응을깊이있게 관찰하는 질적 연구를 수행한다. 이를 통해 공용공간 방문객들에 의한 공용기기 즉시적 공동조작에 대한 참여자들의 만족과 수용을 확인했다. 참여자들의 즉시적 공동조작에 대한 다양한 사용 패턴을 발견했다. 참여자들의 타 방문자들에 대한 배려의 수준이 다양하게 나타남을 발견했다. 본 논문는 공용공간공용기기의 새로운 조작방식인, 공용공간 방문객들에 의한 공용기기 즉시적 공동조작에 대한 방문객들의 활용과 수용 측면을 집중적으로 관찰한 첫번째 사례이다. 또한, 모르는 사람들 간의 컴퓨터 매개 인터랙션을 통해 공용 기기 조작의 문제를 해결하는 과정을 실제 환경 속에서 관찰한 첫번째 연구이다.
