The unusual natural disasters have prompted the need to develop ‘green hydrogen’ technology, which produces hydrogen by splitting water using electricity generated from renewable energy sources. In water electrolysis, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has a sluggish reaction rate and requires a large overpotential. Therefore, it is required to develop a high-performance catalyst that expedites OER. Replacing OER with ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) that operates at a lower potential and can generate high-value acetate has received great attention. However, unlike OER, there is little research on translating the catalytic performance in terms of the electronic structure. Perovskite oxide is a promising electrocatalyst because it is a non-platinum-group metal catalyst and possesses structural stability, excellent catalytic activity, and compositional flexibility. Specifically, substituting an aliovalent element in the A-site can indirectly affect the B-site transition metals and oxygen ions, which are highly correlated with electrochemical behaviors.
Here, the effect of Ca substitution in the A-site of LaCoO3 is highlighted. The series of La1-xCaxCoO3-δ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 1) possessing both highly crystallinity and similar morphologies is successfully prepared. With an increase in Ca concentration, crystal structure symmetry enhances and holes are created on the oxygen ligand and Co 3d t2g orbitals. These modifications result in an evolution of electronic structure by increasing the overlap of Co 3d and O 2p orbitals and creating hole states in the band structure. This ultimately (1) rises density of states below the Fermi level, (2) activates lattice oxygen, (3) decreases charge-transfer energy, and (4) induces a semiconductor-to-metal transition. Consequently, both OER and EOR activity increases with Ca substitution with a facilitated charge transfer. This study aims to provide a guide for translating electrochemical catalysts based on their electronic structure, and it would bring new insights into the development of EOR catalysts.
심각한 자연재해로 인해 재생가능에너지원으로부터 생성된 전력을 이용하여 물을 분해하여 수소를 생산하는 “녹색 수소” 기술을 개발할 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 물 전기분해의 산소발생반응은 반응속도가 느리고 큰 과전압이 필요하다. 따라서 산소발생반응을 촉진할 수 있는 고성능 촉매의 개발이 요구되고 있다. 한편 산소발생반응을, 더 낮은 전위에서 반응이 일어나고 반응물로 고부가가치의 아세테이트가 생성되는 에탄올산화반응으로 대체하려는 시도가 주목을 받고 있다. 하지만 산소발생반응과 달리 전자 구조의 관점에서 에탄올산화반응의 촉매 성능을 해석하는 것에 대한 연구는 거의 보고되지 않았다. 페로브스카이트 산화물은 비 백금계 촉매이며, 구조적 안정성, 우수한 촉매 활성 및 조성의 유연성을 갖추고 있기 때문에 유망한 전기화학 촉매 소재이다. 특히 A-site에 이종원소를 치환하면 전기화학적 거동과 높은 상관관계를 갖는 B-site의 전이금속 및 산소 이온에 간접적으로 영향을 줄 수 있다.
본 연구에서는 LaCoO3의 A-site에 칼슘의 치환 효과를 보고한다. 높은 결정성과 유사한 morphology를 갖는 일련의 La1-xCaxCoO3-δ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 1)를 제조하였다. 칼슘의 농도가 증가하면 결정구조의 대칭성이 높아지고 산소 리간드와 코발트 3d의 t2g 오비탈에 정공이 발생한다. 이러한 변화는 코발트 3d 오비탈과 산소 2p 오비탈의 중첩을 증가시키고 밴드 구조 내에 정공을 생성하므로 전자 구조가 진화하게 된다. 이는 궁극적으로 (1) 페르미 레벨 아래에 있는 상태 밀도를 증가시키고, (2) 격자 산소를 활성화시키며, (3) 전하 이동 에너지를 감소시키고, (4) 반도체에서 금속으로의 전이를 유도한다. 결과적으로 칼슘 치환은 산소발생반응 및 에탄올산화반응의 활성을 모두 증가시키고 전하 이동을 촉진한다. 본 연구는 전기화학 촉매를 전자 구조로 해석하는 데 도움이 될 것이라고 생각하며, 산소발생반응 촉매의 개발에 새로운 통찰력을 가져올 것이라 기대하는 바이다.
