This study focuses on hydrogen production as a substitute for fossil fuels to escape from climate change. In particular, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in hydrogen production through water electrolysis has been identified as a major challenge due to efficiency constraints caused by activation energy issues. In this paper, the relationship between surface amorphization and lattice oxygen evolution reaction during the OER process is elucidated, utilizing ABO3 perovskite oxide catalysts, especially LaCoO3. In the LaCoO3 film verified for stability through Pourbaix diagrams, surface amorphization during the OER at specific potentials was confirmed through STEM images. Additionally, lattice oxygen participation was observed through the analysis of 18 oxygen isotopes, which is linked to the loss of active sites through the leaching of metal ions. These research findings contribute to the development of stable OER oxide catalysts by demonstrating that the role of lattice oxygen induces surface restructuring during OER, leading to the leaching of metal ions and subsequent loss of active sites.
