With the increasing popularity of online dating systems, recommendation algorithms are now increasingly influential in finding a romantic partner. Drawing on our interviews, we explore the impacts of online dating algorithms on user emotions, perceptions and behaviors. Our analysis reveals the system pose negative emotional impacts, and induce behaviors far from relationship building. We conducted user participatory design workshops to identify the causes of the influences and derive design opportunities for a relationship building online dating experience. Through our analysis, we were able to derive four design implications desired by our participants. We conclude with a discussion for redesigning the current algorithmic online dating ecosystem. We suggest an algorithm system that support user sense of agencies, consideration in psychological safety, adjusting the transparency of the system, and balancing the conflicting goals between diverse stakeholders of the online dating services.
온라인 데이팅 시스템의 인기와 함께, 알고리즘은 이제 데이팅 상대를 찾는 데 있어 점점 더 큰 영향력을 발휘하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 인터뷰를 통해 온라인 데이팅 알고리즘이 사용자의 감정과 행동에 미치는 영향을 탐구했다. 인터뷰 데이터를 통해, 온라인 데이팅 시스템이 사용자의 감정에 부정적인 영향을 미치며, 타인과의 관계 형성과는 거리가 먼 행동을 유도한다는 것을 밝혔다. 우리는 사용자 참여형 디자인 워크샵을 진행하여 이러한 영향의 원인을 분석하고 사용자가 원하는 관계 형성을 위한 온라인 데이팅 알고리즘의 특성을 분석했다. 그리고 워크샵 데이터를 통해, 참가자들이 원하는 네 가지 디자인 함의를 도출했다. 본 연구는 현재의 온라인 데이팅 생태계의 알고리즘 경험을 재설계하기 위한 논의로 마무리한다. 우리는 사용자의 주도적 사용을 지원하며, 사용자의 심리적 안전을 지원하고, 알고리즘 투명성의 조정하고, 현실의 다양한 이해관계를 고려하여 디자인된 알고리즘 시스템을 제안한다.
