Envision a future where robots apologize with the gentle fragrance of flowers or repel with malodor. Integrating olfaction into robots, especially social robots designed for human interaction and communication, offers profound possibilities for enhancing social engagement and interactivity. Addressing this potential, researchers have recently cast a spotlight on the potential of robot olfactory interfaces. However, understanding end users' expectations remains a challenge, given the scarcity of relevant data. In response, we present Olfactory Puppetry, a novel method inspired by stick puppetry, aimed at unraveling the user expectations surrounding olfactory interfaces in the context of social robots. In a qualitative workshop employing Olfactory Puppetry, we explore various user expectations and examine the potential of Olfactory Puppetry as a method for uncovering user needs. Our research findings highlight the method’s advantages in promoting experiential, unpredicted, and elaborate user expectations through the individual and integrated aspects of olfaction and puppetry.
로봇이 꽃 향기로 사과하거나 악취로 사람을 쫓아낼 수 있다면 어떨까? 로봇, 특히 인간과 의사소통을 목적으로 설계된 소셜 로봇에 후각을 통합하는 것은 인간과 로봇 간의 사회적 상호작용을 깊이 향상시킬 수 있는 흥미로운 가능성을 제시한다. 이에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 최근 학계에서는 로봇 후각 인터페이스의 잠재력이 강조되고 있다. 그러나 관련 데이터의 부족으로 최종 사용자의 기대를 이해하는 것은 여전히 어려운 과제이다. 이에 대응하여 본 연구에서는 "후각 인형극"이라는 참여적 디자인 방법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 막대 인형극에서 영감을 받아 소셜 로봇의 맥락에서 후각 인터페이스에 대한 사용자 기대를 조명하는 데 중점을 두고 있다. 본 연구는 후각 인형극을 활용한 질적 워크샵을 통해 다양한 사용자 기대를 조사하고, 이를 통해 사용자 요구 사항을 발굴하는 효과를 평가하였다. 이러한 결과의 시사점을 통해 후각과 인형극이라는 두 요소의 통합이 어떻게 체험적이고, 예측할 수 없으며, 정교한 사용자 기대를 촉진하는지 강조한다.
