This paper is a study emphasizing the exploration of phenomena and context in artistic data visualization. It begins with a comprehensive literature review to present the current challenges faced by artistic data visualization in terms of defining its terminology and the criticisms it encounters between the tool and art. The core of this paper lies in overcoming these limitations by exploring ‘indexicality’ and ‘context’, highlighting their importance in understanding data as a phenomenon and uncovering its intrinsic causal relationships. By examining cases of data visualization in contemporary art, the paper emphasizes the role of artists in imparting both spacial and artistic context, and discusses the accumulation of context based on the DIKW pyramid. Ultimately, through a case study on air visualization, the paper argues the importance of understanding the essential causal relationships revealed by data as phenomena, going beyond merely exposing data patterns and providing artistic inspiration. It suggests the potential of context accumulation to reach the ‘wisdom’ level in the knowledge hierarchy.
본 논문은 예술적 데이터 시각화에 있어 현상과 맥락에 대한 탐구를 강조한 연구이다. 먼저 포괄적인 문헌 검토로 현재의 예술적 데이터 시각화가 용어의 정의에 있어 직면한 어려움과 도구와 예술 사이에서 노출되는 비판을 종합하여 기존 시각화 예술의 한계를 제시한다. 본 논문의 핵심은 이를 극복하기 위해 ‘지표성’과 ‘맥락’을 탐구한다는 점으로, 데이터를 현상으로 이해하고 내재적 인과관계를 밝히는 데 있어 그 중요성을 강조한다. 현대 예술의 데이터 시각화 사례를 탐구함으로써 장소적 맥락과 예술적 맥락을 부여하는 예술가의 역할을 강조하고, DIKW 피라미드를 중심으로 맥락의 축적을 논의한다. 최종적으로는 공기 시각화에 대한 케이스 스터디를 통해 예술적 데이터 시각화가 단순히 데이터의 패턴을 드러내고 예술적 영감을 주는 것을 넘어, 현상으로서의 데이터가 드러내는 본질적 인과관계를 이해하는 것이 중요함을 주장하고 맥락의 축적이 지식계층구조의 ‘지혜’에 도달할 잠재적 가능성을 제안한다.
