This study investigates the effects of negative screening announcements by European Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) funds on the stock price of targeted firms and their ecosystem. Utilizing event study methodology based on the market model, the research analyzes a sample of 177 firms spanning 15 countries. Contrary to the hypothesis that stock prices would universally decline post-announcement, the result varied across the sectors. While non-weapons manufacturers’ stock dropped temporarily, weapons manufacturers’ stock price dropped significantly from the release date and lasted up to 30 days. The significant stock price decline in the defense industry sector suggests that industry characteristics such as bilateral monopoly and high capital intensity contribute to risk pooling difficulties. The finding offers empirical evidence of the negative impact of socially responsible investment funds on the defense industry ecosystem and each firm’s stock price and behavior.
본 연구는 유럽의 사회적 책임투자 펀드의 네거티브 스크리닝 발표가 투자 대상 기업의 주가와 해당 기업의 산업 생태계에 미치는 영향을 조사한다. 본 연구는 시장 모델에 기반한 사건 연구 방법론을 활용하여 15개국 177개 기업의 표본을 분석한다. 발표 후 대상 기업의 주가가 일률적으로 하락할 것이라는 가설과는 달리, 업종에 따라 각기 다른 결과가 나타났다. 비방위산업 부문의 주가는 네거티브 스크리닝 이후에도 일시적인 차이만 발생하였으나, 방위산업 부문은 발표일 주변부터 30일 구간까지 장기적인 주가하락이 발생하였다. 방위사업 부문의 유의미한 주가 하락은 쌍방 독점적이고 높은 자본집약도와 같은 산업 특징이 리스크 풀링에 어려움을 초래한다고 분석한다. 본 연구는 사회적 책임투자가 방위산업계와 개별 업체의 주가에 부정적인 영향을 끼쳐 행동변화를 초래할 가능성을 경험적으로 확인했다.
