This paper describes the relationships of the sector characteristics respectively with management information system(MIS) performance and the information management(IM) strategy on human workforces within an organization. For this purpose, a research model is proposed with sector as a contingency factor on the performance of MIS. The model deals with three IM strategy variables(MIS success variables): the top management concern, the user's perception, and the IS department support. Moreover, the model considers two MIS performance variables, the user satisfaction and the system usage.
The model is validated using data collected from a field study of 356 users on 16 Korean business organizations. ANOVA, ANCOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise regression are used to test the research hypothesis.
The results of the study indicate the following implications. First, the characteristics of sectors affect the IM strategy and MIS performance. The saving sector, in particular, has higher level of IM strategy and IS performance than manufacturing or equipment sectors. Second, higher user satisfaction will be achieved by increasing the support from IS department independently of the sectors. Finally, the system usage is closely related to each stage of MIS growth, therefore, the IM strategies to increase the system usage should be differentiated in each sectors.
Implication of the results on further research and managerial practice are highlighted at the end.
