For the characterization of active site, the correlation between the active site of catalyst and the catalytic behavior in olefin polymerization(polymerization of styrene and ethylene) was investigated over the various types of metallocene catalysts systems.
In order to understand the characteristics of homogeneous catalyst, the polymerization of ethylene and styrene were carried out over different types of organometallic catalysts; i.e., Type Ⅰ catalyst without cyclopentadienyl ligand($TiCl_4$) and Type Ⅱ catalyst, with one Cp ligand($CpTiCl_3$). The activity of Type Ⅱ catalyst was much higher than that of Type Ⅰ catalyst. Molecular weight distribution(MWD) of syndiotactic polystyrene prepared with Type Ⅰ catalyst was broad and the shape of MWD was bimodal. Whereas MWD of syndiotactic polystyrene prepared with Type Ⅱ catalyst was narrow and the shape of MWD was unimodal. As the results of the catalytic behavior and the polymer analysis, Type Ⅰ catalyst seems to be unstable at the activation stage with MAO. From the results of XRD, the crystalline structure of polystyrene with different types of catalyst was investigated. The form fraction of melt-crystallized polystyrene increased according to the syndiotacticity of polystyrene. Therefore, the form is more compact structure in the crystalline packing than form. In order to examine the copolymerization behaviors with different types of catalyst, the styrene-ethylene copolymerization was carried out. The styrene response of Type Ⅱ catalyst was higher than that of Type Ⅰ catalyst in styrene-ethylene copolymerization. It might be due to the different electrophilicity of cationic titanium site in the catalyst systems. The crystalline structures of melt-crystallized styrene-ethylene copolymers were depended on the types of catalysts.
Homogeneous catalysts with half-metallocene($CpTiCl_3$, $Cp^*TiCl_3$, $Cp^*Ti(CH_3)_3$, and $IndTiCl_3$) and several kinds of silica supported metallocene catalysts($CpTiCl_3/SiO_2$, $CpTiCl_3/MAO/SiO_2$, $Cp^*TiCl_3/SiO_2$, $Cp^*Ti(CH_3)_3/SiO_2$, $IndTiCl_3/SiO_2$) were used to investigate the catalytic behavior in the polymerization of styrene. The supported metallocene catalyst on non-modified silica showed better performance than the supported metallocene catalyst on the silica modified with aluminum compound or the homogeneous catalyst in the styrene polymerization in terms of the catalytic activity and the syndiotacticity, the melting temperature, and the molecular weight of syndiotactic polystyrene. It is postulated that stereoregularity are favored by a more stabilized structure(steric interaction) on the surface of the supported catalyst. Accordingly higher molecular weight, higher tacticity and higher melting point of polymers were expected in the system of the supported catalyst. Moreover, the active sites supported on $SiO_2$ are more stable in the styrene polymerization than non-supported active sites. In spite of low Al/Ti mole ratio(<300), the $Cp^*TiCl_3/SiO_2$ catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity in the styrene polymerization. And the syndiotactic polystyrene produced by $Cp^*TiCl_3/SiO_2$ showed the highest thermal property. The silica supported metallocene catalysts had maximum point on the catalytic activity as a function of mole ratio Al/Ti in the styrene polymerization. The silica supported metallocene catalyst may have a high economic potential, because expensive cocatalyst(MAO) could be effectively reduced.
The UV-VIS(ultraviolet-visible) and the ESR(electron spin resonance) spectroscopy on the catalysts systems with different aging time and Al/Ti mole ratio were measured for elucidating the active $Ti^{3+}$ species and the formation mechanism of active sites in the styrene polymerization. In homogeneous catalyst system, the plausible activation scheme of half-metallocene and MAO was suggested by the results of UV-VIS spectroscopic study. The model for the active site for silica supported metallocene catalyst was suggested by the results of ESR spectroscopic study. The oxidation state of titanium in supported metallocene on silica seems to be 4+, because there was no signals in the ESR spectroscopy. The $Ti^{3+} species, which were reduced by MAO, resonating at g=1.984 and 1.980 in ESR spectra seems to be active sites of $CpTiCl_3/SiO_2$ catalyst in the styrene polymerization. The supported metallocene catalyst on non-modified silica was easily activated by MAO in the styrene polymerization The intensities of ESR signals at g=1.984 and 1.980 were well correlated with the catalytic activity in the styrene polymerization.
