New business is important because it provides the future growth and the profitability of a company under competition. Because new business generally requires large cash resources and has high failure rates, the evaluation of new business opportunities and their selection are very critical decisions to companies.
In making these decisions, a number of screening criteria can be used such as market attractiveness and business strength. However there are so many criteria to be applied and it is difficult to determine their relative importance because the importance of each criterion may differ according to the company's situations. In addition, the new business opportunities should be evaluated consistently, exactly and rapidly because there can be many proposals of new business. Under such considerations, the decision support system which deals with a large number of criteria, manages their relative weights, and synthesizes the scores for them would be an appropriate tool for new business evaluation.
To obtain the relative weights of criteria, the analytic hierarchy process can be applied easily. The developed DSS can derive the weights, check their consistencies, and modify the set of criteria. In evaluating the new businesses, companies generally consider their profitability. Therefore the DSS for new business evaluation also should manipulate the financial data and calculate the profitability values of new business. These should be incorporated with the scores of other criteria in the evaluation. Doing this, the developed DSS uses the calculated profitability values directly in the evaluation which is based on the AHP without performing the pairwise comparisons for the criteria related to the profitability.
신규사업은 경쟁 환경 속에서 미래의 성장과 수익을 제공하는 수단이기 때문에 중요한 의미를 가진다. 신규사업에는 막대한 비용과 위험이 내재되어 있어, 사업 기회를 평가하고 선택하는 것은 기업에 있어 매우 중요한 의사 결정이라 말할 수 있다.
이러한 결정을 할 때, 시장의 매력도나 사업에서의 경쟁력과 같은 많은 평가 기준들이 사용될 수 있는데, 적용되어야 할 평가 기준이 매우 많고, 기업의 상황에 따라 이들 기준의 상대적 중요성이 달라지기 때문에 기준들의 중요성 산출이 어렵게 된다. 더우기 신규사업에 관한 많은 제안이 있을 수 있기 때문에 이를 일관성 있고 신속하고 정확하게 평가하는 것이 필요하다. 이러한 사항들을 고려할 때, 많은 평가 기준을 다루고 이들의 상대적 중요성을 관리하며 종합적이 평가 점수를 계산하는 의사결정지원시스템은 신규사업 평가에 있어 적합한 도구가 될 것이다.
평가 기준의 상대적 중요성을 도출하기 위해서, 계층분석과정(AHP)이 쉽게 적용될 수 있다. 본 연구에서 개발한 의사결정 시스템은 평가 기준의 중요성을 도출하고 일관성의 검사하고 기준 항목을 변경하는 기능을 갖추고 있다. 신규사업 평가에 있어 일반적으로 기업들은 수익성을 고려한다. 그러므로, 신규사업 평가를 위한 의사결정지원시스템은 이러한 재무적 자료를 다루고 수익성을 계산할 수 있어야 한다. 이러한 수익성 관련 항목들은 평가시, 다른 평가 기준에 대한 점수들과 함께 고려되어야 한다. 이를 위해서 개발된 의사결정지원시스템은 계층분석과정에서 사용되는 수익성 관련 기준에 대해, 별도의 쌍대비교 없이 수익성 계산 결과를 직접 이용한다.
