With the enhancement of computing power and broadband communication, the type of data processed by modern computers has been migrated from alphanumeric to multimedia such as image, audio and video. This transition occurs in a variety of new specific applications such as medical information systems, CAD/CAM systems, geographical information systems.
This thesis describes research on the medical multimedia database system for medical data which are similar to multimedia(MM)data except for new characteristics. In this thesis, first, we address the characteristics of medical data, and then on the basis of the medical data, we investigate the functional requirements of the medical MM-DBMS. Second, we propose an architecture of the medical MM-DBMS. The architecture is based on 3 layers(user interface, object management, storage). Finally, we propose a schema definition for medical database and operations for efficient manipulation of the medical database using the proposed schema.
