In recent years, as the internet is expanded and multimedia technology is advanced, many new multimedia services are required over the internet. Many mutimedia service systems over the internet have been studied and implemented. However, since the bandwidth of the current internet is too low, it is difficult to transmit the multimedia data over the internet within restricted time.
In this thesis, we implement a multimedia on demand service system using audio/video codec with high compression ratio and show that our system can transmit multimedia data in real time over the internet. This service system supports a client/server architecture. The client consists of a WWW(World Wide Web) browser, and audio/video decoder with high compression ratio. We use ITU-T H.263 codec for video and Truespeech codec for audio. The server consists of HTTPD(http daemon), and a service routine using CGI(Common Gateway Interface). And we implement a data trasmission routine using socket library to support TCP/IP. We test a service system using news and movie data as test clips for this system. The data rate of the test is 20 - 50 kbps for video and 8.5kbps for audio. Applications for our system are shopping on demand, video information, traveling information and so on.
