On account of the ever increasing demand for high performance and efficiency ,the design of rotating machinery is pressed toward light weight and high operating speed so that in-depth study and accurate knowledge on vibration characteristics of the machines have become increasingly important to meet with the requirements such as the durability, reliability, performance, and environmental acceptability. Among others, modal testing of such machines has provided a major contribution to understand and to control many vibration phenomena encountered in practice.
In recent years, time series methods have been widely and successfully used for system and/or modal parameter identification of stationary structures in many fields as an alternative to the frequency-domain approaches to overcome their inherent drawbacks. Unlike other stationary structures, rotors show peculiar modal characteristics known as the backward and forward modes with directivity information. Conventional modal testing methods often ignore the directivity of modes when they are applied to rotating machinery. It often results in heavy overlapping of the backward and forward modes in the frequency domain, leading to ineffective modal parameter identification. In the past, ARMAX (AutoRegressive Moving Average with eXogenous inputs) model-based approaches utilized the conventional modal testing theory developed for stationary structures. Thus it is not adequate to apply the conventional approach to rotating machinery, because both the conventional modal testing theory and ARMAX model adopt the real notation (real-valued signal processing), yielding complex conjugate pairs of eigensolutions, that is, losing the important directivity information of modes. Extensive investigations on the complex modal testing theory and modal parameter identification for rotating machinery have recently been reported, whose key idea is to use the directional frequency response functions (dFRFs) between complex inputs and outputs. The complex modal testing method allows clear physical insight into the backward and forward modes, and enables the separation of those modes in the frequency domain so that effective rotor dynamics identification is possible.
In this work, a new time series method, directional ARMAX (dARMAX) model-based approach, is proposed for rotor dynamics identification. To implement the complex modal testing theory in the time-domain, the dARMAX model is derived from the dFRFs by accommodating the complex-valued signals to account for the rotor dynamic characteristics. Conventional parameter estimation method and model order criteria are extended to treat the complex-valued signals. A schematic fitting strategy is established for effective parameter estimations of the dARMAX model. Numerical simulations and experiments are carried out to verify and demonstrate validation, applicability and effectiveness of the proposed dARMAX model-based approach for the rotordynamics identification. The simulations and experiments show that the complex time series method successfully implements the complex modal testing in the time domain, and is superior in nature to the conventional ARMAX and the frequency-domain methods in the estimation of the modal parameters for isotropic and weakly anisotropic rotor systems.
Although the machines are carefully designed for high safety, use high quality materials, and are thoroughly inspected prior to service, with the advent of such high speed machinery condition monitoring and diagnosis have also become important to predict the condition or detect the fault of the machines and avoid any failure or damage. To diagnose defective elements, signature analysis is necessary to extract some important features which describe the condition of each elements. Spectrum analysis is probably the most popular signal processing technique for diagnosing mechanical failures or faults because the frequency components and the corresponding amplitudes vary in accordance with various fault mechanism. In particular, the directional power spectra (dPS) of complex-valued signals has been proven to be a powerful diagnostic tool for rotating machinery. However, the dPS technique, originally developed for rotating machinery, can also be applied to nonrotating machines. As a spectral estimator, the FFT method has inherent limitations related to frequency resolution, variability, and inability to discern between narrow-band random and true periodic components , while the Autoregressive (AR) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) spectral estimators possess better capabilities in frequency resolution and power estimates, respectively. In this work, the directional AR and ML spectral estimators are introduced to account for complex-valued signals, resulting dPS are used for diagnosis of an automobile engine, a typical nonrotating machine, and rolling element bearings, a typical rotating machine element.
In conclusion, the proposed diagnostic technique utilizing the dPS can be effectively used for diagnosis of rotating as well as nonrotating machines.
