With the advancement of the sensors in both mobile phones and wearables, humans’ behaviour, personality, or even mental status can be derived from these data. In order to perform such human subject research, real-world data collection studies that collect detailed mobile phone and wearable data from a large number of participants are necessary. However, there is a lack of prior work on protecting theprivacy of these participants while collecting their data. In order to mitigate their privacy concerns, we implemented an application, Privacy-viz, which allows the participants to explore their own collected data and adjust their own data collection settings. Our preliminary user study (N=9) showed that Privacy-viz successfully met the users’ expectations and needs on data exploration and could relieve participants’ privacy concerns while participating in the data collection studies. Our findings offered design insights for similar applications and helped us to propose several directions for improvements.
모바일 및 웨어러블 센서 기술의 발전으로 데이터로부터 사람의 행동, 성격, 또는 심리 상태를 도출하는 것이 가능해졌다. 이러한 인간대상 연구 수행을 위해 대규모 참가자를 대상으로 모바일 및 웨어러블 데이터를 수집하는 실험이 필수적이다. 하지만, 데이터 수집 과정에서 참가자들의 프라이버시 보호에 대한 선행 연구가 부족하다. 본 연구에서는 참가자들의 프라이버시 염려에 대응하기 위해 참가자가 직접 수집된 데이터를 탐색하고 데이터 수집 조건을 설정 할 수 있도록 돕는 모바일 앱을 개발하였다. 9명을 대상으로 한 사용자 실험 결과는 데이터 탐색에 대한 사용자의 요구 사항을 충족시켰으며 데이터 수집 연구에 참여하는 동안 참가자의 프라이버시 염려를 감소시킬 수 있음을 보여주었다. 사용자 실험 결과를 바탕으로 모바일 및 웨어러블 데이터 수집 환경에서 사용자의 프라이버시 염려를 완화할 수 있는 데이터 관리 도구에 대한 디자인 함의를 논의한다.
