Governments and markets in leading industrialized nations, including South Korea, the United States, and Japan, are concentrating on promoting and nurturing fast-growing startups, particularly those led by young entrepreneurs, as a strategy to overcome sluggish growth and bolster technological competitiveness. However, such growth-oriented startups often face financial instability and underdeveloped products and services, thus relying on external investment up until their initial public offering (IPO). Given these conditions, investment decisions for startups made by venture capitalists and other investment firms are primarily based on limited information, such as the startup's technological and human capital, as well as the founder's attributes including their education and entrepreneurial experience. This research conducts an empirical analysis of the impacts of a founder's connections, personal characteristics, and the characteristics of the startup itself on the attraction of investment funds. The connections of the founder are represented by variables such as university alumni status and the number of friends on social networks. These variables were then classified according to the startup's technology, business attributes, or the founder's academic major. Our findings indicate that startups with a higher number of patents, a larger founding team, and alumni from higher QS-ranked universities tend to attract a larger amount of investment. These results have significant implications for the venture capital industry and the startup ecosystem, providing valuable insights for the formulation of investment strategies, attraction of capital, and the development of startup incubation programs.
