Since globalisation became a predominant concept in the 1990s, international borders have blurred and the movement of people, goods, services, and capital has never been easier. Among these movements, the movement of people has significant political, economic, and ㄴsocial implications for both the sending and receiving countries. In this study, we addressed three topics arising from these population movements. First, we discuss the transmission of the infectious disease, that is, COVID-19 surfaced in 2019. Second, we investigated native attitudes towards immigrants and immigration policies. Third, we delve into the movement of talent in academia, primarily through the lens of PhD hiring and placement networks of globally recognised academic institutions. In the first study, we examined the impact of various socioeconomic and political factors on the transmission of COVID-19, using a gravity model. The second paper assessed Koreans’ attitudes towards immigrants and immigration, positing that natives may prefer certain migrant groups to others. We empirically examined Koreans’ attitudes towards three different migrant groups in Korea: those who came for marriage, labour, and ethnic Korean returnees from China (Joseonjok). The third paper investigates the structural characteristics embedded in the PhD hiring and placement network and its impact on academic institutional performance.
1990년대 국제화와 세계화가 화두가 되기 시작하면서, 세계는 국가 간의 상품, 인구, 서비스 및 자본의 이동이 자유로워지며 국경의 의미가 퇴색하게 되었다. IT 기술과 교통 수단의 비약적인 발전은 국가 간 인구의 교류와 이동을 그 어느 때보다 쉽게 만들었다. 이러한 인구의 이동은 인구를 송출하거나 받아들이는 양측 국가에 정치적, 경제적, 사회적으로 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 연구에서는 인간 이동이 초래하는 세가지 주요한 이슈에 대해 다루었다. 첫 번째 논문에서는 인구 이동을 통한 전염병 전파 문제를 다루었다. 기존 역학 모델이 아닌 중력 모델을 이용하여 COVID-19 확산 과정을 파악하였다. 또한, 정치, 경제, 환경, 그리고 정책 변수들이 COVID-19확산에 어떠한 영향을 주는지에 대해 연구하였다. 두 번째 논문에서는 이민 수용 국가의 국민들이 이민과 이주민에 대해 어떠한 태도를 가지는지 분석학고 정책적 제안을 다루었다. 이를 위해 국제사회조사 프로그램의 ‘국가 정체성 모듈 I과 II’와 국가통계포털의 인구, 경제, 이민 통계자료를 활용하여 한국인의 이민 및 이주민에 대한 태도를 연구하였다. 세 번째 논문에서는 인간 이동을 통한 지식의 확산에 대해 연구하였다. QS 글로벌 대학 랭킹 200위 안에 포함된 대학의 경제학과와 물리학과 교수의 박사 취득 학교와 채용 학교의 네트워크를 만들어, 이를 통해 인적자원이 이동을 네트워크에 내제된 사회자본의 개념으로 분석하였다.
