In 21st century, referring to the knowledge society, exploration and exploitation are vital concepts in organizational management, particularly within knowledge-based strategies. Leading companies such as Microsoft, Intel, and Google recognize the significance of knowledge management for core competitiveness, leading to the establishment of supportive cultures and infrastructures.
This research investigates the dynamics and implication of exploration and exploitation in the context of knowledge management. Exploration involves creating new knowledge through innovation, risk-taking, and flexibility, while exploitation focuses on refining and utilizing existing knowledge for implementation and efficiency. Since previous research has given limited attention to the complexities faced by real-world organization and individual-level strategies on it, this study aims to address these gaps and navigating strategies for intra-organizational challenges.
The research comprises three chapters, each examining a key aspect within the realm of exploration and exploitation. This research explores 1) the impact of individual autonomy on the balance between exploration and exploitation, 2) the effects of goal discrepancy within the organization and its implication on exploration and exploitation, and 3) the challenges and strategies associated with pursuing multiple goals despite limited resources.
By bridging theoretical models and practical realities, this research contributes to the existing literature on exploration-exploitation dynamics, decision-making process, goal management, and knowledge management. Theoretical contributions include a deeper understanding of the interplay between individual behaviors and organizational outcomes, shedding light on the complexities of managing exploration and exploitation. Also, it offers practical insights for decision-makers in their pursuit of a balance approach to exploration and exploitation.
지식 사회라고 불리는 21세기에서 탐험과 활용은 조직 경영에서 중요한 개념으로 손꼽히고 있다. 마이크로소프트, 인텔, 구글과 같은 선도 기업들은 핵심 경쟁력 확보를 위해 지식 관리 차원에서의 탐험과 탐색의 중요성을 인식하고 이를 위한 문화와 인프라를 구축하고 있다.
이에 본 연구는 지식 관리의 맥락에서 탐험과 활용의 역학과 함의를 탐구하고자 한다. 탐험이란 혁신, 위험 감수, 유연성 등의 특성을 기반으로 새로운 지식을 창출하는 것을 의미하며 활용이란 기존 지식을 정제하고 활용하여 구현과 효율성을 강화하는 것에 초점을 두는 것을 의미한다. 기존 선행연구에서는 현식 조직이 직면하는 복잡성과 개인 수준의 전략에 제한적인 관심을 기울였기 때문에, 본 연구는 이러한 연구 공백을 채우고 효율적인 조직 전략을 탐구하는 것을 목표로 삼았다.
본 연구는 지식 관리 차원에서의 탐험과 활용 관련 핵심 요인을 조사하는 세 개의 장으로 구성되어 있다. 첫번째 장에서는 개인 자율성이 탐험과 활용 사이의 균형에 미치는 영향을 조사한다. 두번째 장에서는 조직 내 목표 불일치가 탐험과 활용에 미치는 영향과 함의를 연구한다. 마지막 장에서는 제한된 자원을 활용하여 여러 목표를 추구하는 전략을 알아보려 한다.
이를 위해 문헌 조사를 중심으로 시뮬레이션 연구를 진행한다. 지식 창출 및 관리, 특히 조직학습에 관한 기존 연구를 검토하고 기존 연구 모델을 확장하여 조직이 직면할 다양한 환경에서 효율적인 전략을 모색한다. 이를 통해 목표 관리 및 지식 관리, 탐험과 활용에 대한 문헌을 확장하는 이론적 기여를 할 수 있으며, 개인 행동과 조직적 결과 간 상호 작용에 대한 이론적 기여를 제공하고자 한다. 나아가 조직의 의사 결정자들이 활용할 수 있는 조직에서의 효율적인 지식 창출 및 관리를 할 수 있는 전략을 제시하는 등 실용적 기여를 할 수 있다고 생각한다.
