The determination method of sensor and actuator combinations is a very important issue in active noise control system. Traditionally, the combination of sensors and actuators has been determined based on the controllability and observability defined in lumped parameter system. These are performance measures based on error. Controllability is the criterion for actuator selection, and observability is the criterion for sensor selection. Because of the dichotomous characteristic of controllability and observability, the combination of sensors and actuators is generally considered independent. However, most distributed parameter system such as active noise control system cannot satisfy controllability and observability. Therefore, the independence of sensor and actuator combination is also not guaranteed. Therefore, in this dissertation, the relationship between the sensor and actuator combination of the active noise control system is investigated theoretically. Based on this, a sensor and actuator configuration method suitable for the active noise control system is proposed. Although noise reduction is the most important issue in active noise control system, it is also important to reduce the input energy in situations where a similar reduction or a small reduction loss is acceptable. High levels of input energy make the system unstable and vulnerable to disturbances. High input energy level also causes noise increase in remaing area outside the control area. Degree of controllability, which is a performance measure based on input energy, is used in the lumped parameter system. Degree of controllability is defined only for systems that satisfy controllability. However, as mentioned above, most distributed parameter systems, including active noise control system, cannot satisfy controllability. Therefore, in this paper, controllability for an active noise control system is defined. For a system that satisfies the defined controllability, degree of controllability, which is an input energy-based performance measure, is newly defined, and based on this, a method for selecting an input energy-based sensor and actuator for an active noise control system is proposed.
