The development of high-power lasers to destroy electronic circuits inside of an aircraft is actively under way, and there is a need to develop a protection system which is capable of defend such highly powered attack lasers. The protection system currently under development uses absorption and reflection to reduce the laser intensity. However, much information has not been disclosed, and it is hard to determine the feasibility of such technology. Accordingly, this study aims to introduce a realistic protection system that protects an aircraft targeted by a high-powered laser.
When a media with different densities is presented in the optical path of the laser, deformation such as scattering, absorption, and reflection occurs, thus the intensity of the laser is reduced. In general, high-power lasers uses a laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm, which has a high transmittance rate in atmospheric condition, resulting in difficulty of reducing its intensity by absorption and reflection. Therefore in this study, scattering was used. It was confirmed that the intensity of a laser light having a wavelength of 1064 nm is dominantly decreased by Mie scattering. Mie scattering occurs when the particle that scatters the light has a similar size to the wavelength of the irradiated light. Additionally, it is known that Mie scattering is effectively occurred when the particle has a spherical shape. Thus, in this study, a protection system using water aerosols is demonstrated. Water was used due to its high surface tension. Laser intensity was reduced by spraying water aerosols with a size of 1 $\sim$ 5 $\mu$m through a collison nebulizer, which is similar to the wavelength. To confirm the system is feasible, the results were compared where different flow types were simulated by a subsonic blowdown tunnel and a supersonic wind tunnel. Moreover, through joint research with Sungkyunkwan University, high pulsed laser having a similar output to a laser weapon was additionally used.
In conclusion, experiments were held whether the intensity decrease of a highly powered laser, which targets an aircraft through water aerosol injection, is capable in various flow environments, and the results are summarized in this paper.
