Ionospheric disturbances are short-term deviation in the ionospheric electron density of an unusual range, which can occur on a local or global scale. Ionospheric disturbances cause large errors in calculating the position of users of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and pose a threat to the user's safety. Therefore, identifying ionospheric disturbances is an important research task to ensure the safety of users of GNSS. Among ionospheric disturbances, Medium-scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (MSTID) occur frequently in mid-latitudes, so studies on their characteristics and effects on GNSS are needed. MSTID are being studied using GNSS Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS). However, existing MSTID studies do not show robust results for all situations, and the MSTID impact on users has not been analyzed.
In this thesis, an algorithm that can robustly detect MSTID without being limited to specific situations was developed, and the characteristics of MSTID were identified and modeled in order to analyze the possible impact on GNSS users. In addition, positioning errors of GNSS users were analyzed in all ranges of modeled MSTID. This study is expected to be helpful in analyzing the effects of ionospheric disturbances on GNSS users.
