Online meetings have become indispensable in collaborative remote work environments due to the increased remote work and globalization. Their distributed and location-agnostic nature often causes vulnerability to voluntary and involuntary distractions, which leads to a loss of engagement and context. However, working from home environments has unavoidable distractions, and natural multitasking has positive tradeoff effects that increase overall work productivity. This study investigates the impact of real-time transcriptions (i.e., full-transcripts, summaries, and keywords) as a solution to facilitate online meetings during distracting moments while still preserving multitasking behaviors. Through two rounds of controlled user studies, we demonstrate both qualitatively and quantitatively that real-time transcriptions help participants catch up with the meeting flow and reduce interference, particularly after distractions. Furthermore, we uncover additional benefits of real-time transcriptions, such as supporting content recall, and suggest design implications for future online meeting platforms to adaptively provide transcriptions based on users' specific needs and goals.
원격근무나 다국적 협업 등 근무의 형태들이 다양해지면서 화상 회의는 원격 협업 근무 환경에 없어서는 안 될 필수 요소가 되었지만, 주변 환경이 통제되어 있지 않고 회의 장소가 분산되어 있다는 특성 때문에 참여자들이 자의적, 타의적으로 쉽게 주의력을 잃음으로써 회의의 참여도와 이해도를 떨어뜨린다는 단점을 가진다. 그러나 재택근무 환경에서는 불가피한 방해 요소가 발생할 수 있고, 참여자가 자발적으로 진행하는 멀티태스킹의 경우 전체적인 업무 생산성을 높일 수 있다는 장점도 가진다. 본 연구에서는 화상 회의 참여자들의 멀티태스킹 행동을 제한하지 않으면서 집중력이 분산되었을 때도 화상 회의에 원활하게 참여할 방안으로 실시간 자막(전체 자막, 요약문, 키워드)을 제공하고 그 효과를 탐색하였다. 우리는 두 종류의 통제된 실험을 통해 화상 회의 참여자들이 실시간 자막의 제공을 통해 회의 흐름을 더 잘 이해하고 멀티태스킹에 덜 방해받았다고 느끼는 것을 확인했다. 실시간 자막의 이러한 장점은 주의력을 분산시키는 상황 이후에 더 뚜렷하게 관찰되었다. 또한, 실시간 자막의 추가적인 효과(회의 내용 복기 지원 등)를 밝히고, 다양한 목적을 가진 사용자에게 맞춤형으로 제공될 수 있는 미래의 온라인 회의 플랫폼에 대한 설계적 시사점을 제시한다.
