Selective retrieval of goal-dependent information from long-term memory is an essential element of everyday life. State-based working memory models, which have recently attracted research attention, propose that attentional selection of mental representations guide ongoing behaviors by retrieving goal-dependent information selectively from long-term memory into working memory. However, how goal-dependent information selectively retrieved from long-term memory is processed in the brain as working memory remains unclear. To directly investigate neural representations during selective long-term memory retrieval, we performed an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment involving separate learning and selective retrieval sessions. During the learning session, participants memorized scenes in which real-life objects were placed in a natural fashion. The following day, participants in the scanner were asked to selectively retrieve a cued object from the memorized scenes. Independent scans of object and scene perception were taken. Based on multi-voxel pattern analysis, we found that retrieval cue–specific representations tended to be sustained throughout the late phase of selective retrieval in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and angular gyrus (AG). Direct comparisons of neural representations during selective retrieval and those during object perception revealed that AG activity was associated with targeted object information, whereas the dlPFC exhibited a prominent representation of non-targeted objects. Both the dlPFC and AG showed a common representation of retrieved scene information. Object and scene representations were observed mainly during the early phase of selective retrieval and did not persist to the late phase. Different tendencies of the representations unfolded over time, suggesting temporal changes in representations during selective retrieval. We confirmed the representational difference between the early and later phases of selective retrieval, as well as dynamic changes in representations during the early phase compared with the late phase. These results suggest not only differential information processing but temporal dynamics in information processing in the dlPFC and AG during selective retrieval of long-term memory.
장기기억으로부터 행동목적에 부합하는 특정 정보를 선택적으로 인출하는 능력은 일상생활을 영위하는데 필수적인 기능이다. 최근 주목받고 있는 상태 기반 작업기억 이론에 따르면 행동목적에 따라 장기기억으로부터 인출된 선택적 정보가 작업기억으로 활성화 되어 우리 행동을 안내하는 정보로 사용된다. 그러나 장기기억으로부터 인출된 선택적 정보가 뇌에서 어떻게 처리되고 작업기억으로 활성화되는지에 대해서는 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 본 연구에서는 이를 직접적으로 밝히고자 기능적 자기공명뇌영상 실험을 진행하였다. 실험은 학습 세션과 선택적 인출 세션으로 구성되었으며, 두 세션은 이틀에 걸쳐 진행되었다. 피험자는 첫 날에 여러 일상의 물체를 포함하고 있는 장면을 반복하여 학습하였으며, 그 다음 날 학습 세션에서 배운 장면 중 인출 단서에 따라 특정 물체만을 선택적으로 인출하도록 요청 받았다. 먼저 다중복셀패턴 분석을 기반으로 기억인출 단서에 따른 정보 표상이 나타나는지 분석한 결과, 배외측전전두엽과 각회에서 인출 단서에 특이적인 정보 표상이 인출 중반 이후부터 후반까지 유지되는 경향을 관찰할 수 있었다. 또한 선택적 인출 중 신경표상을 각 물체를 지각할 때의 신경표상과 직접 비교함으로써 각회에서는 단서에 따라 인출이 요구된 물체 정보의 표상이 두드러진 반면, 배외측전전두엽에서는 인출이 요구되지 않았지만 같은 장면에 있었던 물체 정보의 표상이 두드러짐을 발견하였다. 또한 각회와 배외측전전두엽 모두에서 인출된 장면 정보가 표상되고 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 물체와 장면 정보의 표상은 인출 후반까지 유지되지는 않았고 전반에서 주로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 인출 중 시간에 따른 정보 표상 변화를 확인해본 결과, 배외측전전두엽과 각회에서 인출 전반과 후반에서 표상되는 정보가 다르며 후반에 비해 전반에는 시간에 따라 역동적인 표상변화가 있음을 관찰하였다. 이러한 결과는 선택적 장기기억 인출 과정 중 각회와 배외측전전두엽에서 서로 다른 정보 처리가 있을 뿐 아니라 시간에 따라 역동적으로 변화하는 정보처리가 수반됨을 제안하고 있다.
