The post-pandemic era has witnessed a rapid increase in the use of information and communication technology (ICT), leading to a normalization of its use. This shift has resulted in a diverse range of settings for platform characteristics and self-representation, as users seek more immersive and realistic virtual communication experiences. In this context, the process of trust-building becomes even more crucial during the early stages of virtual communication. Understanding how trust is formed, evolves, and interacts with online settings in the early stages of communication is essential. This research utilized a Vignettes experiment, involving 138 online participants, to investigate the impact of swift trust on the speaker’s message credibility during the early stage of a virtual meeting. Additionally, the moderating effect of media naturalness, based on evolution theory, on the relationship between swift trust and message credibility was examined. Moreover, a comparison was made between two settings: a virtual meeting with real-time avatars that supported synchronized facial expressions and a traditional virtual meeting with human faces. The results indicated a significant positive effect of swift trust on message credibility during the early stages of virtual meetings, in both avatar and human settings. Furthermore, the study revealed a significant moderating effect of media naturalness in all settings. However, when utilizing real-time avatars, no significant differences were found in the moderating effect compared to the human face setting. The findings of this paper are expected to contribute to the understanding of trust dynamics in virtual communication and the impact of media characteristics on the evolution of trust.
포스트 팬데믹 시대는 빠르게 증가한 정보통신기술(ICT)의 사용이 보편화되는 모습을 보인다. 이러한 변화로 인해 사용자들은 더 몰입감이 있고 현실적인 가상 커뮤니케이션 경험을 추구하며, 플랫폼 및 자기 표현의 설정이 다양해지고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 가상 커뮤니케이션의 초기 단계에서 일어나는 신뢰 형성 과정은 더욱 큰 중요성을 지닌다. 의사소통의 초기 단계에서 신뢰가 어떻게 형성되고, 발전하고, 온라인 설정과 상호작용하는지 이해하는 것은 필수적이다. 본 연구는 138명의 온라인 참가자를 대상으로 한 비네트 (vignettes) 실험을 활용하여 가상 회의의 초기 단계에서 속성신뢰가 화자의 메시지 신뢰도에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 또한 진화 이론을 기반으로 한 미디어 자연성이 속성신뢰와 메시지 신뢰성의 관계에 미치는 조절효과를 분석하였다. 추가적으로, 동기화된 얼굴 표정을 지원하는 실시간 아바타(real-time avatar)와의 가상회의와 인간얼굴을 가진 전통적인 가상회의 설정을 비교했다. 결과는 가상회의의 초기단계에서 아바타 및 인간 설정 모두에서 속성신뢰가 메시지 신뢰도에 유의한 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 나타내었다. 더불어, 본 연구는 모든 설정에서 미디어 자연성의 유의한 조절 효과를 보여주었다. 그러나 실시간 아바타를 사용할 때, 인간 얼굴 설정과 비교했을 때, 조절 효과에서 유의미한 차이가 발견되지 않았다. 본 논문의 결과를 통해 가상 의사소통에서의 신뢰 역학과, 미디어 특성이 신뢰의 변화에 주는 영향의 이해에 기여함을 기대한다.
