This research was conducted to find the criteria for desirable broadcast journalism in the midst of intensified competition for viewer ratings and a diagnosis of the crisis in news production. Specifically, I analyzed the award-winning works of the "Broadcast Journalist of the Month" award presented by the Broadcast Journalists Association to uncover those criteria. To accomplish this, I selected a total of 710 award-winning works from the first award in 2009 to the 171st award in 2022 as the subjects of my content analysis. The analysis results revealed that the general characteristics of the "Broadcast Journalist of the Month" award-winning works were primarily focused on topics related to environment, science, and medicine. They consisted largely of breaking news articles that promptly covered timely events and were produced through planning. Multiple journalists from the same team participated in collaborative reporting, with a significant number of ordinary citizens serving as primary sources. Over time, compared to the early establishment of the "Broadcast Journalist of the Month" award, there has been an increase in award-winning works addressing environmental issues, science, medicine, and human rights. While the proportion of award-winning works that simply convey information has decreased, there has been an increase in award-winning works with an in-depth analytical tendency. Additionally, there has been a decrease in breaking news articles with a focus on delivering news as it happens, while award-winning works that involve interpretation and investigative reporting have increased. The proportion of award-winning planning articles has also risen, surpassing incident response or tip-based articles. The primary sources for the award-winning works have shifted from government agencies and experts to statistics and reports from citizen organizations. The research also analyzed the differences in award-winning work characteristics across different government administrations. Although there were no significant differences observed overall, statistically significant differences were found in specific types of exceptional events, journalistic motives, reporting methods, and primary sources. This research holds significance as the first study to illuminate the attributes of desirable broadcast journalism through a content analysis of the "Broadcast Journalist of the Month" award-winning works. From a practical perspective, I hope that the results of this research can be utilized as guidelines by broadcast journalists in their reporting activities.
본 연구는 시청률 경쟁 심화에 따른 방송뉴스 연성화와 저널리즘 위기 진단 속에 바람직한 방송저널리즘의 기준을 찾기 위해 진행됐다. 구체적으로는 방송기자연합회가 시상하는 ‘이달의 방송기자상’ 수상작 분석을 통해 그 기준을 찾아보고자 했다. 이를 위해 2008년 제1회 ‘이달의 방송기자상’ 수상작부터 2022년 제171회까지 모두 710편의 수상작을 분석대상으로 선정해 내용분석을 실시했다. 분석결과, ‘이달의 방송기자상’ 수상작의 일반적 특징은 주로 환경‧과학‧의료를 주제로 하고 시의성 있는 사건에 대해 신속하게 1보로 보도한 속보형 기사가 많았으며 기획을 통해 작성됐고 동일한 팀 내에서 여러 기자가 공동 취재했으며 주 취재원은 일반인이 많았던 것으로 나타났다. 시기적으로는 ‘이달의 방송기자상’ 제정 초기와 비교해 최근에 올수록 환경‧과학‧의료나 인권을 주제로 한 수상작이 많아졌으며 단순히 정보를 전달하는 수상작 비율은 줄어든 반면 심층적 분석성향의 수상작이 증가했다. 또 1보 성향의 속보형 수상작은 줄고 있는 반면 가공형, 발굴형 기사인 수상작이 늘었고 사건사고 대응이나 제보보다 기획 기사의 수상작 비율이 높아진 것으로 확인됐다. 수상작들의 주 취재원도 정부기관이나 전문가, 시민단체에서 통계‧보고서 쪽으로 바뀌고 있는 경향이 나타났다. 정부시기별로 수상작 특성의 차이도 분석했다. 대체로 정부시기별로 큰 차이를 보이지는 않았지만 특종유형과 취재계기, 취재방식, 주 취재원 항목에서는 통계적 유의성을 띠는 차이를 보였다. 본 연구는 ‘이달의 방송기자상’ 수상작 내용분석을 통해 바람직한 방송저널리즘의 속성을 밝히고자 한 첫 연구라는 의의를 갖는다. 실무적 차원에서는 본 연구의 결과가 방송기자들이 취재활동을 할 때 가이드라인으로서 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다.
