The controversy over ‘corporate transparency’ in the Korean bio-pharmaceutical industry has been consistently raised, which usually focuses on individual firm’s management information disclosure. This study aimed to survey this phenomenon about corporate transparency issue in detail, with the goal of finding forward-looking insight in connection with the importance of the industry’s further development in Korea. Through qualitative research consisting of in-depth interviews with industry experts, based on case studies and other general issues in the bio-pharmaceutical sector, diverse factors were pointed out what may cause corporate transparency problems linked to both internal and external reasons; lack of firm’s capabilities and stakeholders’ low levels of expertise as well as nderperforming technology, and limitations of the industrial ecosystem.
In conclusion, the effort to improve corporate transparency in the Korean bio-pharmaceutical industry should not only lead to the liquidation of 'bad' companies but can lead to an ultimate virtuous industrial cycle to maintain 'good' companies' on-going market participation and sustainability. This also will provide nourishment for the industry's growth to be a competitive inheritance for the next generation, and this study will contribute with these important implications in the field of corporate management, corporate public relations, and future government policy.
한국 바이오 제약 산업에서 기업의 경영 성과 공개 및 소통과 관련된 ‘투명성’ 논란이 지속 제기돼 오고 있다. 본 연구에서는 바이오 제약 산업 발전 중요도와 연계하여, 기업 투명성 제고의 필요성과 개선 방안을 모색하기 위해 관련 문제에 대한 현상을 진단하고 개선 과제를 도출하고자 한다. 업계 전문 직업인 인터뷰 중심의 질적 자료 수집을 통해 확인한 바에 따르면, 한국 바이오 제약 산업에서의 기업 투명성 저해 요인으로는 기업 역량 및 이해 관계자의 전문성 부족, 실체 없는 과잉 기대 등의 내재적 요인과 더불어 선진국 수준에 미달하는 한국의 산업 기술력과 인프라, 생태계의 한계 등 산업 구조적 문제들이 다방면으로 지적됐다.
결론적으로 한국 바이오 제약 산업의 기업 투명성 제고는 나쁜 기업을 ‘퇴출’하는 것에 그치지 않고, 좋은 기업들을 더 많이 시장에 ‘참여’하고 ‘존속’할 수 있게 하는 산업의 궁극적 선순환 시스템을 이끌 수 있다. 이는 바이오 제약 산업이 진정한 차세대 먹거리로 성장할 수 있는 자양분이 되며, 한국의 미래 세대를 위한 필수 불가결한 산업 육성의 한 방향으로써 기업 경영 및 정책적 개선 과제에 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다.
