As information and communication technology is accessible anytime and anywhere due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, electronic devices are also making various changes in a direction that can be conveniently used by humans. Especially, in the case of displays, platforms for information delivery, ranging from curved, bendable, foldable, and stretchable, are developed, ultimately seeking to develop to freeforms. In order to be applied to such flexible platforms, electronic devices should also have the characteristic of flexibility, and organic-based electronic devices that can be flexibly manufactured instead of the existing rigid shape are being developed.
However, reliability, one of the main issues of organic electronic devices, limits the continuous development of devices. The reason is that, when organic material reacts with oxygen and moisture, the chemical bonding structure is irreversibly deformed, and an essential problem of degrading the performance of the device occurs. Therefore, an encapsulation technology that protects organic materials and electrodes from oxygen and moisture must be studied.
This research aims to develop an thin film encapsulation to secure flexibility and reliability of organic electronic devices to be manufactured based on various platforms. Through oxygen vacancy defect engineering, external force applied to a single inorganic layer itself was alleviated, and a thin film encapsulation was developed to maintain an initial WVTR even at a strain of 1.7%. This is a study conducted through intrinsic defects of the inorganic layer itself, and is meaningful in showing applicability to various oxides, not specific materials.
