Recently, many studies have been conducted on driving in challenging terrain of quadrupedal walking robots. Among them, studies on walking in discontinuous terrains such as stairs, stepping stones, and cracked terrain, which is difficult for wheel-based robots to go, are in the spotlight. For successful walking in such discontinuous terrain, the robot must have a safe foothold. To this end, many studies have determined the position of the foothold in the planner and controlled the robot’s foot to the position of the foothold in the tracker. At this time, in order to select a safe and feasible foothold position in the planner, the optimization problem must be solved by considering all the static and dynamic conditions of the robot, and information on the surrounding terrain. However, it is difficult to solve this optimization problem in real time because the dynamics of the quadrupedal robot are highly nonlinear, and the cost function and constraints of the optimization problem are in the form of non-convex. This paper presents a planning and control method for a dynamics-determined planner and controller dash in discontinuous terrain through a roll-out method and filter structure that sequentially removes unrealistic footholds. Through the planner and controller proposed in this paper, it is possible to quickly overcome the large gap and stepping stone environment that have not been overcome before
