The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between discretionary earnings smoothing and firm’s credit quality & firm value depending on information environment. The results are summarized as follows. First, the higher the level of discretionary earnings smoothing, the higher the firm’s credit quality, and this relationship was stronger for firms with a weak information environment. Second, the higher the level of discretionary earnings smoothing, the lower the firm value, and this relationship was stronger for firms with a strong information environment. As described by Allayannis et al.(2022), such results suggest that the effect of earnings smoothing is not absolute, but take effect relatively.
본 연구에서는 재량적 이익유연화와 기업신용 및 기업가치의 관계, 정보환경이 그 관계에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석하였다. 재량적 이익유연화 수준이 높은 기업일수록 기업신용은 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 이러한 관계는 기업의 정보환경이 열악할수록 더욱 강하게 나타났다. 또한, 재량적 이익유연화 수준이 높은 기업일수록 기업가치는 낮은 것으로 나타났으며, 이러한 관계는 정보환경이 양호할수록 더욱 강하게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 Allayannis et al.(2022)이 주장하는 바와 같이 이익유연화가 기업에 미치는 효과는 절대적인 것이 아니라, 기업의 정보환경에 따라 상대적으로 나타나는 것으로 해석된다.
