This study shows that estimation using macroeconomic variables and boosting models in estimating future volatility of the KOSPI200 index has superior performance than that of the previously widely used linear regression model and the GARCH model. Unlike the United States, where several macroeconomic variables are provided in short cycles, this study was conducted using macroeconomic variables that are relatively easy to collect according to the situation in Korea. As a result, it was confirmed that estimating future volatility along with past volatility by selecting a small number of variables such as VKOSPI (Variability Index), real exchange rate, and SMB showed higher out-of-sample estimation performance than using many macroeconomic variables together. In addition, it was confirmed whether important variables act in a direction consistent with the intuitions in the general financial market, and their statistical significance was also verified.
