The cumulative return of a momentum strategy significantly decreases when momentum crashes occur. Momentum crashes typically occur when the market rebounds from a bear market, and the momentum return's beta is typically negative. Therefore, to avoid momentum crashes, this paper investigates the common characteristics between the bear market and momentum crashes in the Korean stock market, and creates a momentum crash indicator to analyze the momentum crash indicator strategy. An empirical analysis of the momentum crash indicator strategy shows that the momentum crash indicator strategy performes at a higher level than the constant volatility strategy and the dynamic scaling strategy even after considering transaction costs in the Korean stock market. Furthermore, the momentum crash indicator strategy continues to perform at a high level after the robustness test.
모멘텀 붕괴가 발생하면 모멘텀 전략의 누적수익률을 크게 하락시킨다. 모멘텀 붕괴는 주로 약세장이었던 시장이 다시 반등할 때 발생하며, 모멘텀 수익률의 베타는 주로 음의 값을 나타낸다. 따라서, 모멘텀 붕괴를 방어하기 위해 국내 주식시장에 맞는 약세장과 모멘텀 붕괴 시점의 공통적인 특징을 찾고, 모멘텀 붕괴지표 전략을 분석하기 위해 모멘텀 붕괴지표를 만든다. 모멘텀 붕괴지표 전략을 이용한 실증분석 결과 한국 주식시장에서도 모멘텀 붕괴지표 전략이 거래비용을 고려한 이후에도 상수 변동성 전략, 역동적 조정 전략보다 더 높은 성과를 나타냈다. 또한, 강건성 검증을 실행한 이후에도 모멘텀 붕괴지표 전략이 높은 성과를 나타냈다.
