This study presents the results of an empirical analysis that the leverage and debt maturity structure of a company affect the cross-section of stock returns. A positive premium is observed for companies with a higher leverage and a higher proportion of borrowing as short-term debt. This risk premium is observed more strongly in stocks with a small company size and is affected by economic conditions and changes in the financial market. The premium of short-term leverage, which is higher than long-term leverage, reflects an increase in systemic risk and provides empirical evidence for the rollover risk inherent in short-term debt.
