In this study, I empirically investigate the impact of stock liquidity on firm bankruptcy risk by using data from the Korean market. The results, drawn from a series of difference-in-differences analyses exploiting the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2019 securities exchange tax cut as negative and positive exogenous shocks to stock liquidity, indicate that higher stock liquidity leads to lower default risk. This evidence provides grounds for establishing policies that could mitigate corporate defaults and allows for easier and more accurate prediction of default risk for investors and stakeholders.
