As the time and activities shared by the family at home increased, the social and emotional health of the family became important. However, the self-report-based family health assessment tool previously used to explore and evaluate family health has limitations in supporting various family interaction processes. Therefore, we designed FamilyScope, a family-centric data visualization tool, to find out whether passive sensor data collected through family activity scenarios can quantify the multi-layered aspects of family social and emotional health. In addition, we conducted a preliminary user study with four families (N = 12) in a smart home testbed to observe whether the visualization tool could support exploration and reflection on the family's social interaction. Through interview results analysis, we found that the visualization tool is useful for exploring family-centric data and reflecting on the family interaction process, and that family members’ psychological and behavioral responses and involvement were well reflected in the data. Moreover, it was evaluated to support the discovery of new insights into family members and family interaction processes. The empirical findings and design implications of a family-centric data visualization tool for supporting family social and emotional health were derived in this study.
가정에서 가족이 공유하는 시간과 활동이 증가함에 따라 가족의 사회⋅감정적 건강이 중요해졌다. 하지만 기존에 가족 건강을 탐색하고 평가하기 위해 사용된 자가 보고 기반의 가족 건강 측정 도구는 가족의 다양한 상호작용 과정에 대한 고려가 미흡하다는 한계가 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 가족 활동 시나리오를 통해 수집된 센서 데이터가 가족의 사회⋅감정적 건강에 대한 다층적인 측면을 정량화할 수 있는지 알아보고자, 가족 중심 데이터 시각화 도구를 디자인하였다. 또한, 시각화 도구의 가족의 상호작용 과정에 대한 탐색 및 고찰을 지원 여부를 관찰 위해 3인 가족 네 팀 (총 12명)을 대상으로 스마트홈 테스트베드에서 사용자 실험과 사후 인터뷰를 수행하였다. 인터뷰 결과 분석을 통해, 시각화 도구가 가족 중심 데이터를 탐색하고 가족 상호작용 과정에 대해 고찰하는데 유용하며 가족 구성원의 심리적, 행동적 반응과 참여가 데이터에 잘 반영되어 있음을 알아냈다. 또한 시각화 도구가 가족 구성원 및 가족 상호작용 과정에 대한 새로운 인사이트의 발견을 지원한다고 평가되었다. 본 연구는 가족 중심 데이터 기반 시각화 도구의 가족 사회⋅감정적 건강 지원에 대한 경험적 발견과 디자인 함의를 도출하였다.
