The demand for time series anomaly detection spans numerous domains, including finance, healthcare, and cloud computing. The system moderator reviews the detection results and takes appropriate actions to resolve the issue. However, understanding the rationale behind the detection remains challenging. In the absence of an explanation of the detection, it is unlikely that the moderator will be convinced that the system is practical. Our study is the first to present an example-based framework that breaks new ground for explaining time series anomalies. We incorporate the domains of psychology, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence to design an effective example-based technique. The proposed method selects a convincing example from the past sequence and quantitatively evaluates its quality. Experiments demonstrate that the example-based approach is more intuitive than explanation-by-rules and explanation-by-features. Plus, the adoption of a variational autoencoder network significantly improves the quality of examples.
