Despite many advantages (corrosion resistance, ductility and other mechanical properties) as structural materials, austenitic stainless steels (ASSs) have been avoided in high temperature and neutron irradiation environment. In that sense, advanced ASS (ARES) was developed for enhancing radiation resistance and high-temperature mechanical properties by dispersing nano-sized niobium carbides (NbC) in austenitic matrix. However, dissolution of NbC precipitates in this developed alloy has been observed during the micro-pillar compression tests for measuring the precipitate strengthening effect. Therefore, in this dissertation, the author conducts heat-treatment, creep, micro-pillar compression tests, and irradiation tests for ARES to evaluate the thermo-mechanical stability of NbC precipitates with the environments of high temperature, applied stress and irradiation.
