It is essential to develop energy production technologies using renewable energy sources that are infinitely supplied due to the finiteness of fossil fuels and environmental pollution issues. Thermoelectric technology is the technology that produces electricity from heat by using the Seebeck effect. Since thermoelectric materials can convert industrial waste heat into electric power, recent research on various thermoelectric materials has been conducted. Half-Heusler thermoelectric material is one of the promising materials due to its high Seebeck coefficient, mechanical robustness, and thermal stability, however, the figure of merit, ZT is low due to its relatively high thermal conductivity. The microstructure of thermoelectric materials has a significant effect on thermoelectric performance thus, microstructure analysis is an important factor to improve thermoelectric performance. In this study, we tried to improve the thermoelectric performance by adding Ta and Sb to the NbCoSn-based half-Heusler compound and reducing the grain size through a rapid solidification process. We observed that the lattice thermal conductivity calculated by Debye-Callaway model is different from the measured value. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Atom Probe Tomography (APT) were conducted and the existence of the secondary phases was observed.
