Oxygen evolution reaction plays a key role in applying to environment friendly energy generation and conversion devices such as water electrolysis and metal-air battery. There are numerous studies about a surface amorphization resulted from lattice collapse during oxygen evolution reaction when applied to high overpotential and long time, however, to our knowledge, systematically elucidating the phenomena has yet to be demonstrated. In this work, we systematically observe the surface amorphization phenomena under potential-dependent and time-dependent conditions with atomic scales using LaCoO3 epitaxial thin films and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). We confirm that Co cation dissolution occurs first during the initial oxygen evolution reaction, and finally, thick amorphous layers, in a different phase from the bulk, are observed. This result has highlighted the importance of elucidating surface amorphization mechanisms for modeling and suggesting more stable electrocatalysts.
