Joint agency, a group-level sense of agency, has been studied as an essential cognitive element that takes place while engaging in joint actions such as collaborative tasks. Though joint agency has been actively investigated in diverse contexts (e.g. performance, reward schedule, and predictability), the studies were mostly conducted in 2D digital environments. Taking into account the rise of virtual reality (VR) environments as new platforms for remote collaboration, this study proposes a VR card matching game task to test the effect of reward schedule and counterpart's avatar hand visibility on the sense of joint agency. The experiment follows a 2 by 2 within-subjects design, with the variables being reward schedule (fair and equal) and counterpart’s avatar hand visibility (absent and present). The results showed that participants felt a higher sense of joint agency when the reward was distributed equally regardless of performance and when the counterpart's avatar hand was present, along with a significant interaction effect. Joint agency, cooperativeness, reward fairness, and social presence showed positive correlations with each other; The four ratings showed negative correlations with performance elements such as play time, absolute score difference, absolute reward point difference, and fail count. The results indicate that each of the traditional reward schedules and VR-specific avatar element affect the sense of joint agency during a joint VR task. We discuss the implications of joint agency analyses along with other cognitive and performance elements.
