Artificial intelligence (AI) promises considerable changes in clinical practice, yet little is known about the impact of patients’ severity of illness on their medical AI utilization. The study suggests that the patients’ severity of illness decreases their intention to use medical AI because the AI cannot meet their increasing need for doctors’ empathy. To examine the effect of illness severity on medical AI utilization, a scenario-based online experiment (N=227) was conducted. The experimental results revealed patients’ strong preference for human doctors compared to medical AI regardless of illness severity. Perceived empathy of medical AI mediates the reluctance to healthcare provided by AI. The findings enhance understanding of human-AI interaction and doctor-patient communication and provide practical implications for medical AI service developers.
인공지능은 의학계에 혁신적인 변화를 가져올 것으로 기대되나, 환자의 질병 중증도가 환자의 의료용 인공지능 사용에 미치는 영향은 거의 알려져 있지 않다. 질병 중증도는 의사의 공감에 대한 환자의 요구를 증가시키나 의료용 인공지능은 이 요구를 충족시킬 수 없으며, 따라서 해당 연구는 질병 중증도가 의료용 인공지능 사용을 감소시킨다고 제안한다. 질병 중증도의 효과를 검증하기 위해 온라인 실험 (N=277)을 실행했다. 실험 결과, 참여자들은 질병 중증도와 무관하게 인공지능 의사에 대해 더욱 낮은 선호를 보였으며, 의사의 공감 능력이 해당 효과를 매개하였다. 이는 의료용 인공지능 사용에 있어서 병의 중증도 등 환자의 상황적인 요소보다 인공지능에 대한 환자의 인식이 더욱 중요한 영향을 미치기 때문으로 추정된다. 해당 연구 결과는 사람-컴퓨터 상호작용과 의사-환자 소통에 대한 이해를 증진시키고 의료용 인공지능 서비스 개발자에게 실무적인 시사점을 제공한다.
