This study examines the effect of internal monitoring mechanisms on a firm’s environmental and social (ES) performance level, in emerging markets of Korea. We find a positive relationship between institutional investor holdings, especially pension investors, and corporate ES level. Outside directors also influence firm’s ES performance in a positive direction. The results are significant and consistent in difference in difference analysis, propensity score matching method, and robustness test. These findings suggest that internal monitoring mechanism can help drive firms’ non-financial performance.
본 연구는 한국 상장 기업을 대상으로 내부 모니터링 메커니즘이 기업의 환경 및 사회(ES) 성과수준에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 기관투자자의 주식 보유, 특히 연금 투자자의 보유가 기업 환경, 사회 성과에 미치는 영향은 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기업 내 사외이사의 비율이 높아질수록 기업의 ES 성과에 양의 영향을 미쳤다. 그 결과는 이중차분법(Difference in Differences), 성향점수 매칭법(Propensity Score Matching), 강건성 분석에서 유의하고 일관성 있게 나타났다. 본 연구는 내부 모니터링 메커니즘이 기업의 비재무적 성과를 견인하는 데에 도움이 될 수 있음을 시사한다.
