This thesis consists of three essays on banking and household finance. The first chapter examines the relationship between banks' role as liquidity providers and opacity in financial reporting, measured with discretionary loan loss provisions. I investigate the 2007 financial crisis, when unexpected credit line drawdowns generated difficulties in liquidity provision for banks with large amounts of pre-crisis unused commitments. I find that such banks increased financial reporting opacity relatively more after the onset of the crisis. The results are consistent with the theoretical literature that highlights the benefit of bank opacity in providing liquidity during distress.
The second chapter explores the relationship between managers' labor mobility and the financial reporting quality of banks. Using the state-level adoption of the Inevitable Disclosure Doctrine (IDD) as an exogenous shock discouraging labor mobility, we show that adoption of the IDD is associated with a decline in financial reporting quality, as measured by discretionary loan loss provisions. The effect is larger for banks with managers who have limited outside job opportunities and smaller for banks with tight regulatory oversight. Our results support the view from the career concern hypothesis that bank managers facing restrictions on mobility have greater incentives to engage in discretionary accounting.
In the last chapter, I examine how trade secrets protection, in the form of a restriction on labor mobility, affects households' investment in stocks. The protection of trade secrets may influence firms' and employees' investment in human capital, leading to a change in the prospects of the employees' future earnings and job stability. If individuals hedge against human capital risk in the financial market, they would adjust their investment portfolio in response to a legal change in trade secrets protection. This paper empirically tests this hypothesis using the adoption and rejection of the Inevitable Disclosure Doctrine (IDD). I find that households curb financial risk-taking, by tilting their portfolio away from stocks, in states rejecting the IDD. The results resonate with previous literature highlighting the effect of labor market events on asset pricing.
본 학위 논문은 은행의 재무제표를 통한 정보 공개, 노동 이동성 및 가계의 주식 투자 의사결정에 대해 다루었다. 첫 번째 장에서는 은행이 시장에 유동성을 공급하기 어려워질 때, 재무제표를 통한 정보 공개의 투명성을 어떻게 변화시키는지 살펴보았다. 2007년 금융위기 동안 기업들이 credit line을 통해 대규모 대출을 받으면서, 기존에 사용되지 않고 남아있던 신용한도(unused commitments)가 많았던 은행들이 유동성공급에 더 많은 어려움을 겪게 되었다. 본 연구는 이러한 은행들이 재무제표를 상대적으로 더욱 불투명하게 보고하였다는 분석 결과를 제시한다. 이는 자산에 대한 불투명성을 유지하는 것이 은행의 유동성 공급에 도움이 된다는 선행 이론 연구들의 분석과 일치한다.
두 번째 장에서는 은행 경영자의 노동 이동성이 은행의 정보 공개에 미치는 영향력에 대해 분석하였다. Inevitable Disclosure Doctrine(IDD)의 채택과 폐지를 은행 경영자의 노동 이동성에 대한 외생적인 충격으로 활용하였다. 실증 분석 결과, 노동 이동에 제약이 가해지면 은행이 재무제표를 통해 공개하는 정보의 질이 하락하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 이러한 경향은 은행 경영자들의 외부 고용 기회가 적은 경우 강화되었으며, 반대로 규제당국의 감독이 심한 은행들의 경우 감소하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 노동 이동의 제약이 은행 경영자들에게 이익을 조정할 유인을 제공하기 때문이라고 생각되며, 대리인 문제가 심화되는 것으로 해석할 수 있다.
세 번째 장에서는 영업기밀을 보호하기 위해 노동 이동을 제한하는 것이 근로자의 주식투자에 미치는 영향력을 살펴보았다. 노동 이동 제약으로 인해 근로자들이 현재 직장에 더 오래 근속하게 되면, 미래 소득과 커리어에 대한 불확실성이 줄어들 수 있다. 이로 인해 개인들이 인지하는 인적자본 리스크가 감소하면 위험 자산인 주식에 투자할 유인이 상승하게 될 것이다. 개인들이 금융투자를 통해 인적자본 리스크를 헷지하려는 경향이 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 IDD의 채택과 폐지를 활용한 실증분석을 통해 이러한 가설을 검정한다. 그 결과, IDD가 폐지된 주에서 상대적으로 근로자들의 주식시장 참가율이 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 노동 시장과 금융 시장의 상호작용에 대한 기존 문헌에 새로운 관점을 제시한다.
