Recently, there have been many efforts to increase data speed for short-reach intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) systems to meet the growing bandwidth demands of data center interconnects. Silicon photonics is a technology for fabricating photonic integrated circuits on a silicon wafer. It provides an attractive solution for such high-speed DCI applications due to its advantages in compact footprint and fabrication process compatibility for low-cost and volume production. Especially, silicon photonic traveling-wave Mach-Zehnder modulators based on carrier depletion junctions are widely used because of their large bandwidths and robustness for the operation wavelength and temperature. In this dissertation, high-speed silicon photonics optical-time-division-multiplexing transmitter architectures are proposed for next-generation data center networks based on high-efficiency silicon photonics-based Mach-Zehnder modulators. In addition, the possibility of integrating an optical transceiver based on silicon was studied by experimentally demonstrating an optical transmission system through a high-speed all-silicon waveguide photodetector.
