The financial crisis in 2008 raised serious doubts that centralized structure of the traditional financial industry cannot be trusted anymore. Doubts led to the advent of new fundamental technology (i.e. blockchain), which is proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto to achieve decentralization of existing services. Blockchain is also known as the distributed ledger technology that enables transparent and secure transactions with potential to disrupt the technological landscape of various industries. By the time when blockchain was first introduced, research interests and applications were restricted to financial areas. However, in the era of Industry 4.0, the scope of blockchain technology expands beyond mere digital transactions. Interests in blockchain technology from both academia and industry suggests that blockchain is now at the center of innovation. In this thesis, the development and future of blockchain technology are examined with two different studies. The first study examines the early cryptocurrency market with event study approach in order to reveal determinants of market reaction due to regulation announcements. The second study predicts emerging industrial fields that will incorporate blockchain technology as a disruptive technology based on topic modeling analysis and academia-industry dynamics.
2008년 금융위기는 전통적인 금융산업의 중앙집권적 구조를 더 이상 신뢰할 수 없다는 심각한 의구심을 불러일으켰다. 기존 서비스의 탈중앙화를 달성하기 위해 사토시 나카모토가 제안한 블록체인은 투명하고 안전한 거래를 가능하게 하는 분산 원장 기술로도 알려져 있으며 잠재적으로 다양한 산업의 환경에 영향을 미칠 것으로 알려졌다. 초기에는 학계와 산업계의 관심이 금융 분야로 제한되었으나, 4차산업혁명 시대에서 블록체인 기술의 적용 범위는 단순한 디지털 거래를 넘어 헬스케어, 사물인터넷 등으로 확장되어 블록체인이 혁신의 중심에 있음을 시사하고 있다. 본 학위논문에서는 두 가지 연구를 통해 블록체인 기술의 발전과 미래를 다루고자 한다. 첫 번째 연구는 초기 암호화폐 시장을 대상으로 사건연구 방법론을 활용하여 규제 발표가 시장에 미치는 영향의 결정요인을 밝혀내는 것이 목적이며, 두 번째 연구에서는 토픽 모델링과 기술파급이론을 활용하여 미래에 블록체인 기술이 융합될 산업 분야들을 예측합니다.
