Laser-based ranging techniques have become one of the most important techniques at multiple scales, ranging from gravitational wave detection through semiconductor manufacturing metrology to ultra-long-range space-satellite systems. In particular, because laser-based sensing is a fundamental technology in the era of automation and Industry 4.0, ranging techniques with higher performances are becoming increasingly important. In this thesis, an electro-optic sampling-based timing detector is used to detect the time-of-flight (TOF) of femtosecond optical pulses with ultrafast speed and sub-nanometer resolution. This approach enables high-performance strain sensing, three-dimensional (3D) imaging, and real-time monitoring of complex mechanical dynamics. Furthermore, by enhancing the parallel detection capabilities, a line-scan TOF camera capable of measuring the TOF of >1,000 spatial locations at an ultrafast pixel rate is accomplished. As a result, 3D imaging speed has greatly increased, and previously unseen dynamics can now be observed in real-time.
