Positron Annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is widely used in various fields as the most accurate method to analyze the microstructure of the materials. The principle is to measure the time difference between the 1274 keV gamma-rays generated when positrons are emitted from 22Na source and 511 keV gamma-rays generated from annihilation of positron inside the materials. In PALS, scintillation detectors are used to measure the positron annihilation lifetime of several picosecond, and timing resolution and count rate are the main performance parameters. In this study, we developed digital PAL spectrometer with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) which has various advantages compared with photomultiplier tube (PMT). In addition, the effects of performance parameters were studied. The difference in timing resolution according to gamma-ray energy and the need for differential optimization were identified via analytic method and Monte-Carlo simulation.
