Avatar embodiment has been studied steadily with the emergence of virtual reality. However, the effects of multisensory feedback on the sense of embodiment remain under-explored. Therefore, this study investigates whether continuous multisensory feedback (i.e., visual, auditory, and tactile) affects the detection thresholds and sense of embodiment in remapped hand movements. Psychophysical features revealed that the tactile feedback shows higher threshold values while auditory feedback shows lower values. The threshold range and questionnaire were used as measures of embodiment, and the results revealed that multisensory feedback has no significant effect on increasing the level of the embodiment, despite the differential detection thresholds among conditions. However, consistent results obtained in both objective and subjective measures confirmed that the two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) paradigm is reliable to be utilized as a measure of avatar embodiment. Utilizing multimodal sensory feedback that are easily manipulated with current VR devices, this study examines the effects of multisensory feedback on the sense of embodiment and provides design implications for the use of detection thresholds in VR applications.
