Given that scope 3 emissions at an industrial supply chain level accounts for more than 75% of the firm’s total greenhouse gas emissions and are steadily increasing, it is crucial to address this issue to realize net-zero carbon targets. Furthermore, the recent phase-in of scope 3 emissions in the sustainable disclosure standards has doubled the efforts to measure, manage and disclose the overall environmental impact at the supply chain level. Hence, this study empirically analyzes the relationship between scope 3 emission and the level of sustainable supply chain disclosure based on 2017-2019 corporate data retrieved from global industries with high shares of scope 3 emissions- automobile and food industry. The results indicate that firms with higher scope 3 emissions tend to have higher level of sustainable supply chain disclosure, and the association varies depending on the boundary of scope 3 emissions. This study contributes to recent management and related research by evaluating the level of sustainability disclosure at the industrial supply chain level and empirically analyzing the relationship with its scope 3 emissions.
산업 공급망 차원의 Scope 3 배출량은 온실가스 전체 배출량의 75% 이상을 차지하고 점차 비중이 높아지는 추세로서, 이는 기업의 실질적인 환경 성과 실현에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 또한 최근 지속가능 공시 요구 정보에 Scope 3 배출량이 단계적으로 포함되면서 기업의 직접 배출량 뿐 아니라 산업 공급망 차원에서 배출량을 측정, 관리와 관련 공시의 중요성이 확대되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는, Scope 3 배출 비중이 높은 글로벌 자동차 산업과 식품 산업의 2017-2019 기업 데이터를 바탕으로 이들의 Scope 3 배출실적과 지속가능 공급망 공시 수준간 연관성을 실증 분석하였다. 그 결과 Scope 3 배출량이 많은 기업일수록 지속가능 공급망 공시 수준이 높고, 공급망의 범위에 따라 그 연관성이 달라짐을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 Scope 1, 2 배출과 기업 공시에 한정되어 있던 기존 연구에서 벗어나, 산업 공급망 차원에서 지속가능성 공시 수준을 평가하고 Scope 3 배출과의 관계를 실증 분석함으로써 최근 경영 현안과 관련 연구에 기여한다.
