Corporate scientific research has been empirically treated as it fails to provide adequate incentives for firms due to issues with appropriability and unintended spillovers. Researchers have found, however, that scientific research can help firms perform better in the market although their publication trend is declining. Amongst new literatures emphasizing the importance of upstream participation in firms' performance, there are still gaps to fill in order to explain how basic research impacts firms. In other words, studies examining science to technology linkages showed insufficient connection between patent and publication or science-to-technology linkage and firm performance. In addition, research analyzing the impact of firms' scientific publications on innovation and corporate performances has been sparse. To fill this gap, this study analyses the effects of science to technology linkage on firm performances by measuring author's tacit and embedded knowledge. To be specific, this study not only connects patents and publications at individual knowledge level, but also further examine its effect on firm's innovation and market performance. Our results show that researcher’s embedded knowledge being utilized in science to technology linkage has significant impact on innovation(negative) and market(positive) performance. In addition, researcher's tacit knowledge in science to technology linkage has significant positive relation towards both firm's innovation and market performance. By fully connecting science to technology and firm performance, our study contributes to enhanced understanding of corporate science and accommodates breakthrough methodologies in measuring embedded knowledge. This research shows the importance of tacit and embedded knowledge in corporate science utilization process through invention into firm performance, suggesting corporations to reconsider research activities in enhancing their values.
기업 과학 연구는 appropriability와 의도하지 않은 spillover 효과로 인해 기업에 적절한 인센티브를 제공하지 못한다고 알려졌습니다. 그러나 연구원들은 기업의 논문 발간 횟수가 감소하고 있음에도 불구하고 과학적 연구가 더 나은 기업의 시장 성과를 달성하는 데 도울 수 있다는 것을 발견했습니다. 기업 실적에 대한 upstream 참여의 중요성을 강조하는 새로운 문헌들 가운데, 기초 연구가 기업에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 설명하기에는 여전히 부족한 부분이 있습니다. 정확하게는, 과학과 기술의 연계성을 검토하는 연구들은 논문과 특허 또는 과학-기술 연계와 기업 성과 간의 연계성을 충분히 보여주지 못했습니다. 또한 기업의 과학 출판물이 혁신과 기업 실적에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 연구는 많은 진척을 보이지 않았습니다. 이러한 한계점을 메우기 위해 본 연구에서는 저자의 tacit knowledge와 embedded knowledge를 측정하여 과학-기술 연계가 기업 실적에 미치는 영향을 분석합니다. 구체적으로, 이 연구는 개인의 지식 수준에서 논문과 특허를 연결할 뿐만 아니라, 더 나아가 기업의 혁신과 시장 성과에 미치는 영향을 조사합니다. 본 연구 결과는 과학에서 기술로의 연계에 활용되고 있는 연구원의 embedded knowledge가 혁신 성과에 부정적인 연관성이 있으며, 시장 성과에는 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여줍니다. 또한 과학과 기술 연계에 대한 연구자의 tacit knowledge는 기업의 혁신과 시장 성과 모두에 중요한 긍정적인 영향을 보여줍니다. 과학과 기술 및 기업 성과를 모두 연결함으로써, 우리의 연구는 기업 과학에 대한 이해에 기여하고 embedded knowledge를 측정하는 획기적인 방법론을 제시합니다. 본 연구는 기업 과학의 활용 과정에서 논문 저자의 embedded knowledge와 tacit knowledge가 특허를 통해 기업 성과에 영향을 미치는 중요성을 보여주며, 기업이 시장 및 혁신 성과를 높이는 데 있어 연구 활동의 활성화를 제안합니다.
