What is the role of corporations in addressing community-related challenges such as social inequality? This question is of high importance among scholars and practitioners since the rising global attention toward sustainable development agenda. Yet, up to date, it is not clear if various corporate philanthropic activities are organized on an ad-hoc and random basis or possess a certain strategic nature. Thus, this paper aims to add new knowledge to the area of corporate-community relations by examining an explanatory power of local poverty in understanding corporate giving behavior. Consistent with institutional and stakeholder theories, our study reveals that there is a positive association between measures of poverty and corporate community endeavors. Moreover, that association increases with gender diversity of board members. Research findings signal about the changing trend of corporate contributions from one-time, sporadic nature toward more systematic and strategic form, providing new opportunities for improvement of economic conditions of local communities and alleviating inequality gap.
사회적 불평등과 같은 지역사회 관련 과제를 해결하는 데 있어 기업의 역할은 무엇인가? 이 질문은 지속 가능한 개발 의제에 대한 세계적인 관심이 높아지고 있기 때문에 학자들과 실무자들 사이에서 매우 중요하다. 그러나, 현재까지, 다양한 기업 자선 활동이 임의적이고 무작위로 조직되어 있는지 또는 특정한 전략적 성격을 가지고 있는지는 명확하지 않다. 따라서, 본 논문은 기업 기부 행위를 이해하는 데 있어 지역 빈곤의 설명력을 조사함으로써 기업-공동체 관계 영역에 새로운 지식을 추가하는 것을 목표로 한다. 제도적 및 이해관계자 이론과 일관되게, 우리의 연구는 빈곤의 조치와 기업 공동체 노력 사이에 긍정적인 연관성이 있음을 보여준다. 더욱이, 그 연관성은 이사회의 성별 다양성에 따라 증가한다. 연구결과는 기업기여가 일회성 산발적 성격에서 보다 체계적이고 전략적인 형태로 변화하는 추세에 대한 신호탄으로, 지역사회 경제여건 개선의 새로운 기회를 제공하고 불평등 격차를 완화한다.
